Georgia steps up to the plate. OMG!!!

Get this! The Department of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Addictive Diseases (MHDDAD) is funding a brand new, first and only, Peer Support and Respite Center for people in Georgia who prefer to use an alternative setting to traditional psychiatric hospitalization. This center will be run entirely by peers! The State turned the whole operation over to the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, which means they are in charge of the funding, site location, staffing, development, day-to-day operations, everything from the ground up.

It gets better.

Yesterday I was hired as the Director!

Excuse me while I faint. This goes beyond anything I ever imagined for myself. I am overwhelmed. I am speechless. I am in shock.

This morning I woke up with tears streaming down my face. This is how happy I am.

Be carefull the toes you step on.

Dr Terry Lynch wrote
But I won't be holding my breath waiting for mainstream psychiatry to enthusiastically develop this possibility further. Because to do so might threaten the belief system, might produce results which question the fixation with biology and which might suggest that approaches other than medication may have real potential. This is directly against the beliefs of the psychiatric belief system. Such ideas will not be fully developed as long as biopsychiatry dominates mental health care, regardless of any potential benefit for the user of the mental health services.

Wow! What incredible support! And those of you who have been supportive through the whole process, you know who you are. With friends like you on my side, I know this respite center will succeed. I have no doubts!

I woke up this morning beaming again. I have not experienced this in my life. I am stepping into a dream come true, and this is how it feels. Amazing!

Thank you thank you thank you everyone for believing in me!!!

Jayme, you are my inspiration to forge ahead with what ive seen and know, and I only hope I will be able to do something like you are doing one day. I just must say thank you again, because people like my daughter need people and places like you are going to be the Director-- one person one voice at a time. People need choices, and support when they choose. BRAVO.

Thank you, Stephany. I actually thought of your daughter when I first decided to interview for the job. I know that she would benefit from a respite center, and I wish there was one in your area. I wish there was one in every area. I could see you directing a center like this one. I hope to see this happen one day. Soon!

I'm happy for you too, this is great news all around. Things are discouraging in other parts of the country, some of what goes on in (groovy, liberal) Austin in the name of consumers is mind-jarringly evil, but now we'll have one more model to point to and holler "SEE?! It can be done!"

That's one of the (many) reasons this is so exciting. Not only will we be making a difference to our peers in Georgia, but hopefully everywhere else. What an incredible vision! I'm holding to it.
